Yu-Yin Cheng is an associate professor of History and International Studies. Her specialization is in Chinese intellectual-activism, Chinese women’s history, and Christianity in late imperial China (1368-1910 CE). She teaches courses on Chinese and East Asian culture and history, East-West encounters, world history, and contemporary China. She is the author of A Chronological Biography of Lo Ju-fang (1515-1588): Poet, Philosopher, Activist [in Chinese] (1995), and co-editor of Under Confucian Eyes: Texts on Gender in Chinese History (2001, with Susan Mann).

Andreas Hernandez has a background in social work and music, and holds a PhD in Development Sociology from Cornell University. His work examines the cultural, religious and ecological dimensions of Latin American social movements, particularly in Brazil. Andreas utilizes film as part of his research – his documentary “Hope Will Win Over Fear: The World Social Forums” has been screened on every continent through film festivals, social movement networks, and universities. He has taught at Ithaca College, and through Bard College, the Elmira Maximum Security Prison.

Dr. Kabamba's theoretical interests are the dynamics of conflict, new state formations, transnational trade networks, ethnicity, and global political-economic governance. He has extensive ethnographic experience in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as in Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda. He has published articles on ethnicity, rebel controlled territories, economic empowerment, and modes of political production in the Canadian Journal of African StudiesCongo-AfriqueAnthropological Theory, and Africana. These concerns are also explored in his forthcoming book Business of Civil War: New Forms of Life from the Debris of the State (CODESRIA & Indiana University Press, 2012).

Ghassan Shabaneh is a Mellon Fellow in Human Security at the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Relations at the CUNY Graduate Center, and he is an Associate Professor of Middle East and International Studies at Marymount Manhattan College in NYC. Dr. Shabaneh wrote his doctoral dissertation on "The Role of The United Nations in State Building: The Case of Palestine." He taught and lectured at Rutgers, Hunter, and Queens Colleges in the last few years. During his career, Mr. Shabaneh has done extensive field research in the Middle East.
