February: MMC Students host events celebrating Black History Month
February 17, 2009
February is Black History Month, which is a remembrance of important people and events in African American history. MMC students are bringing awareness to this historical month by hosting two campus activities.
MMC’s Campus Activities Board (CAB) is honoring Black History Month by raising money for The Jackie Robinson Scholarship Fund. From February 17 – 19, members of CAB will be selling T-shirts for $5 in the Nugent Lounge. Proceeds from the T-shirt sales will go toward The Jackie Robinson Scholarship Fund.
Mike Hallinan, a sophomore communications major said, “The T-shirts are affordable and it’s a great way for college students to contribute.”
The Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) is a public, not-for-profit national organization founded by Rachel Robinson in 1973 as a vehicle to perpetuate the memory of Jackie Robinson and his achievements. Serving as an advocate for young people with the greatest need, the Foundation assists increasing numbers of minority youths through the granting of four-year scholarships for higher education.
On February 24, CAB will host a performance and dance lesson by the Magbana Dance and Drum Group. The event is scheduled from 1 to 2:30 p.m., in the Regina Peruggi Room. Light refreshments will be provided. For information contact Julianna at jlucre@mmm.edu or Adrianna at akohlhofer@mmm.edu.
Marymount Manhattan College is an urban, independent, liberal arts college. The mission of the College is to educate a socially and economically diverse population by fostering intellectual achievement and personal growth and by providing opportunities for career development.
