Feb. 24: Author and Biological Engineer Professor Barbara Oakley to Speak at MMC

February 24, 2009
Date: Tuesday, February 24
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Location: Regina Peruggi Room
Contact: Daniel Meltzer at dm22@nyu.edu

MMC presents Professor Barbara Oakley in a special presentation and lecture on February 24. Dr. Oakley is a recent vice president of the IEEE-Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, as well as a Fellow in the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. She is the author of Evil Genes, Why Rome Fell, Hitler Rose, Enron Failed, and My Sister Stole My Mother’s Boyfriend. Dr. Oakley uses neuroscience and evolutionary theory, as well as an unusually adventurous background that has earned her the nickname of a “female Indiana Jones,” to knit together disparate pieces of research that point toward answers to one of the most compelling questions today: “Why do some people intentionally inflect emotional and physical pain on others?” The event will be presented and introduced by Daniel Meltzer, adjunct professor of the Humanities Division. A large turnout is expected, so arrive early to get a good seat. Refreshments will be served.
