CONTACTS: Erin Q. Schwartz, Community Outreach Coordinator, eschwartz@mmm.edu, (212) 517-0655 Manny Romero, Director of Communications & Publications; mromero@mmm.edu; (212) 517-0451
(New York, NY) Marymount Manhattan College is joining a city-wide effort to collect non-perishable food items for New York City’s Food Bank. Marymount Manhattan is participating in the NYC Students Team Up to Fight Hunger (STUFH) program, along with Columbia, The New School, New York University and Fordham University.
“This is the first time that MMC is partnering with Food Bank for NYC for a city-wide University Food Drive,” Erin Q. Schwartz, community outreach coordinator, said. “The event is sponsored by STUFH and all food and money raised goes to the West Side Campaign Against Hunger, a food pantry associated with Food Bank for NYC.”
The Food Drive effort at Marymount Manhattan will be held from February 23 to March 1, as a kick-off event for MMC’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, scheduled March 24-31. Members of the MMC Community can donate non-perishable food items at one of the bins located in the Nugent Lounge or at the lobby of the 55th Street Residence Hall. In addition, money contributions can be made online by visiting http://help.foodbanknyc.org/STUFH. Contributions of all sizes are welcomed.
“West Side Campaign Against Hunger does more than just hand out food – they have social services, exercise classes, and cooking lessons to promote a healthy lifestyle and self-sufficiency among all of their clients,” Schwartz said. “There are not specific items that are in greater need than others, but it was stressed that donating money goes further than donating cans or boxes of food. West Side Campaign Against Hunger can purchase food at 1/3 the cost of a typical grocery store and $1 buys five meals.”
“It is important for members of the MMC community to know about the issues facing fellow New Yorkers, including the prominence and causes of homelessness in the city,” Schwartz said. “Even in tough economic times, we are so fortunate to have enough food to eat and shelter to sleep in; some don’t even have that.”
MMC Community groups participating in this city-wide effort include MMC Outreach, the Community Service Floor (at 55th Street Residence Hall), the International Studies Club, SGA, Campus Ministries and the Community Outreach Coordinator. For more information about STUFH and how to participate contact Erin Schwartz, Community Outreach Coordinator – eschwartz@mmm.edu, 212-517-0655; Ariel O’Brien, MMC Outreach, aobrien1@mmm.edu; Bridgette Devine, Community Service Floor, bdevine@mmm.edu; or Rebecca Buchanan, Campus Ministries, rbuchanan@mmm.edu.
