(New York, NY) As part of a Fall 2008 semester project, the Academic Honors Committee has recently published a brochure by Marymount Manhattan students on the topic of inspiration. The committee encouraged students to reflect on the nature of excellence and inspiration by submitting responses to one of the following questions: “What brings out the best in you,” “What is your source of inspiration,” or “What is excellence?”

Students from a variety of disciplines, including sociology, graphic design, English, biology, dance, speech-language pathology and art, contributed essays to the small brochure, On Inspiration and Excellence.

“We hope that these heartfelt texts will inspire all Marymount Manhattan students to attend Honors Day, which will be held this year on March 17, 2009,” members of the Academic Honors Committee said.

In the entry entitled “The Passion of Movement,” Ian Klein ’11 describes his inspiration as a reaction to people’s movements: “I am a dancer; when I walk down the street, I don’t just see people walking; I see personality in their walk […] It makes me dig more deeply into my understanding of movement and makes me want to try to imitate it.”

The Academic Honors Committee will be distributing copies to students. On Inspiration and Excellence is also available by downloading the linkable PDF.

The Academic Honors Committee includes Committee Chair and Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts Jeff Morrison, Associate Professor of Psychology Cheryl Paradis, Assistant Professor of Philosophy Carrie-Ann Biondi, Instructor of Communication Arts MJ Robinson and Assistant Professor of Art History Adrienne Baxter Bell.
