(New York, NY) With the cooperation of a consortium of New York area colleges, Marymount Manhattan will be presenting five Bachelor of Arts and nine Associate of Arts degrees at the 2009 Bedford Hills College Program (BHCP) Commencement on May 28.
Marymount Manhattan has served as the degree-granting institution for the program since the spring of 1997, and has managed its operations since late 2004. The BHCP offers non-credit college-preparatory courses in writing and math, as well as credit-bearing courses leading to Associate of Arts and Bachelor of Arts degrees. To date, MMC has conferred more than 100 associate’s and bachelor’s degrees to Bedford Hills students since the program’s inception.
This year’s BHCP Commencement theme takes inspiration from the words of Marian Wright Edelman, who is an American activist for the rights of children: “Education is for improving the lives of others and leaving your community and world better than you found it.”
Representatives from Bank Street College, Pace University and Mercy College will be in attendance. Lanie Robertson, an award-winning playwright, will be the guest speaker for the 2009 BHCP Commencement. Mr. Robertson has taught playwriting at the prestigious Iowa Writers Workshop, and this past fall semester, he was a guest speaker here at Bedford Hills College Program, where he discussed Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, his play about the legendary singer Billie Holiday, for Judith Katz’s class on Women in World Drama.
BHCP bachelor’s candidates presented their senior thesis topics on Monday, May 11. Topics include restorative justice, bias in the criminal justice system, human trafficking, the cultural functions of soul food in the African American community, indigenous sign language, the cultural evolution of hip hop, and the various functions of personal narrative.
“These students have worked hard for well over a year on their theses, and we are very, very proud of them and pleased and impressed with the quality of their work,” said Aileen Baumgartner Director of the BHCP.
The 2009 BHCP Commencement will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, 247 Harris Road, Bedford Hills, NY 10507. If you would like to attend or have further questions contact Aileen Baumgartner, Director of the MMC Bedford Hills College Program at (914) 241-3100 Ext. 4514 or (914) 739-9322.
The consortium of colleges includes Bank Street College, Barnard College, Manhattanville College, Mercy College, Pace University and Sarah Lawrence College.
