CONTACTS: Jim Rogers, Dean of Admissions, (212) 517-0430 / jrogers@mmm.edu David Podell, Ph.D., Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dean of the Faculty, (212) 517-0521 / dpodell@mmm.edu
(New York, NY) The Marymount Manhattan community is extending a warm welcome to students who will start their higher education experience in the Fall 2009 semester.
MMC’s Admissions Office communicates daily with new students through phone calls and e-mails to provide advisement that will help them through the final steps before arriving on campus for the new semester. The Admissions Office is also using additional resources to reach out to students. “We created a Twitter account so new students, as well as all of the MMC community, can follow the College and its activities,” said Jim Rogers, Dean of Admissions. “Technology plays a key role in how we communicate to this generation and we need to stay on top of the latest trends.”
On June 23, MMC’s Admissions Office made an appearance on NBC’s “Today” Show, as they were greeted by co-host Matt Lauer, who extended a welcome to MMC’s new students. The appearance is posted was posted on Twitter and can also be viewed by clicking here.
Faculty members will be sending out letters to new students to help them prepare for the Fall semester. “Department Chairs are welcoming the new students by sending letters to all new majors in their department,” Rogers said. “This is an initiative to demonstrate the personal attention we offer at MMC and to express the excitement they feel about a new group of students arriving this Fall 2009.”
The letters, which were sent out earlier this week, provide new students with information about the Learning Communities (LC) Initiative and the Common Reading Program. Students in the LC will be sharing their experience with a group of 16 students, three instructors and an upper-class Peer Leader. All incoming students at MMC will be reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma, by Michael Pollan.
David Podell, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, says new students attending Marymount Manhattan will have many opportunities to exercise their creativity and expand their knowledge.
Dr. Podell extends the following welcome and words of encouragement to the new students who will arrive for the Fall 2009 semester:
You have made an excellent decision in choosing to attend Marymount Manhattan College. You will have a college experience that transforms you intellectually, develops you personally, and prepares you for a lifetime. In your first year at MMC, you will be a member of a learning community – a group of first-year students with common interests who will learn with the best of our faculty.
The goal of our learning communities is to engage your mind right from the start in challenging courses that use New York City as a classroom, with a set of colleagues who will, we hope, become your friends. The common summer reading for new students – Michael Pollan’s “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” – was selected to initiate discussion, debate, and discourse in the classroom, in the hallways and, inevitably, in the cafeteria.
One of the biggest challenges for new students is adjusting to college life: a less structured schedule, more independence and, for some, life in the big city. There are many here to support you. Reach out – to your professors, to the staff, to your fellow students. Most importantly, make the most of your college years. Find the best courses, seek opportunities, sign up for activities, meet the faculty and your fellow students – become an active member of the thriving MMC community.
