Join us to help revitalize Our World Neighborhood Charter School in Astoria, N.Y. This school is one of the largest charter schools in the city! Over 701 students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade attend the school, with 31 percent qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Our World Neighborhood Charter School opened its doors on September 30, 2002, and turned a new page in the history of public education in New York City. The school is an outgrowth of the Astoria Parents Network, a group of parents concerned about overcrowding in the public schools and discouraged by lack of opportunities for meaningful parent involvement in the local schools. The founders of the school were interested in child-centered models of instruction based on cooperative, active learning and parent involvement. The school adopted a comprehensive social-studies model integrating the study of history, geography, literature, social sciences, science, math, art, music, technology and Spanish.
On New York Cares Day, we will paint a welcoming mural near the main entrance, the hope is to have “Welcome” painted in many languages. We will paint a mural that represents the various cultures of the world in the main office. There is painting to be done in the kitchen and gymnasium, and a storage closet to be cleared out and re-organized. Our World Neighborhood Charter School is located at 31-20 37th Street and is easily accessible by taking the R or V train to Steinway Street.

Click “I Agree” on the waiver, then select “Join a Team.” From there, you will need to select “Marymount Manhattan College Alumni Association.” You will then type in your personal information to register and an email will be sent to Shelli Luchs, your Team Leader, letting her know that you have joined.
