(L-R) Father John Savard (Sr. Judith's nephew), Hallie Cohen, M.F.A., Associate Professor of Art and Art Department Coordinator, Harold Savard (Sr. Judith's brother) and his wife Marilyn, and Tom Savard (Sr. Judith's nephew).

(New York, NY) – On September 17, 2009, Marymount Manhattan College (MMC) paid tribute to art and the legacy of an accomplished artist and inspiring professor – Sister Judith Savard, RSHM. As part of the College’s Biennial Faculty Art Exhibit, which is on display from Aug. 31 – Sept. 29, the College hosted the launch of the first Senior Art Exhibitions Catalogue, dedicated to the memory of Sr. Judith Savard. The art reception was held in the Hewitt Gallery of Art.

The Faculty Art Exhibit, curated by Millie Burns, M.F.A., Director of the Hewitt Gallery of Art and Assistant Professor of Art, featured works by 11 full-time and adjunct MMC art professors: Karen Adelaar, Craig Banholzer, Ann Brandeis-Pierno, Hallie Cohen, Steve DeFrank, Millie Falcaro, Carl Gunhouse, James Holl, Judy Anne Mannarino, James Martin and Nicolas Schneider.

Judith Savard, RSHM, taught at Marymount Manhattan College (MMC) from the early 1960s until her death in 2004. She was an inspirational teacher and mentor to generations of students. Sr. Judith led classes in art history, studio art, graphic design and was a forerunner in computer generated art, and served as chair of the Art Department for many years. Sr. Judith created an integrated, multi-faceted art major that continues to thrive at MMC.

The following initiatives of This is the Day, the Campaign for Marymount Manhattan, have been created in memory of Sr. Judith Savard.

The Sr. Judith Savard Endowed Travel Fellowship
Sr. Judith believed deeply in the value of seeing and experiencing art first-hand to enhance awareness of differing social, political and cultural perspectives. This Fellowship will provide financial assistance for a student to study abroad for the summer or a semester. An art major or minor who has completed his/her first year at MMC, with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher and a demonstrated financial need may apply for the Sr. Judith Savard Endowed Travel Fellowship.

The Sr. Judith Savard Faculty Chair
The Sr. Judith Savard fixed-term academic chair will provide funding to support scholarly research by current faculty as well as to fund additional full-time faculty.

Contributions to the Sr. Judith Savard Fund can be sent to the Office of Institutional Advancement at Marymount Manhattan College, 221 E. 71st Street, New York, NY 10021. All pledges received by March 31, 2010 will also help MMC meet a challenge from The Kresge Foundation that will result in a $1.5 million grant to the College. Multi-year pledges are also encouraged and payments do not need to be completed until March 31, 2015.

To learn how you can join others in honoring the memory and life’s work of Sr. Judith Savard, contact Jean Wilhelm at (212) 517-0460 / jwilhelm@mmm.edu.
