MMC Encourages Support for the Bedford Hills College Program Endowment

CONTACTS:
Jean Wilhelm, B.A., Campaign Director, Office of Institutional Advancement, (212) 517-0460 / jwilhelm@mmm.edu

(New York, NY) – Marymount Manhattan College’s (MMC) Bedford Hills College Program (BHCP) will be the focus of two special receptions scheduled in November.

The College will be hosting a reception at MMC and a reception in Westchester County, NY to offer information about the BHCP and a special screening of the 8-minute DVD featuring testimonials from Bedford Hills students and members of the MMC community. The personal stories of Bedford Hills graduates illustrate how the program has impacted their lives and their families. Announcements and updates for these receptions will be forthcoming.

In addition to raising funds for annual expenses, to ensure the future of BHCP, the College is building a $4 million endowment as part of This is the Day, the Campaign for Marymount Manhattan. This endowment will provide long-term financial stability for the program by covering a major portion of its annual operating expenses. To date, the College has raised more than $2 million for the BHCP endowment. Recent awards to the endowment include a generous $500,000 grant from The Clark Foundation and a pledge from an enthusiastic donor to match up to $1 million in contributions to the endowment.

The Bedford Hills College Program is offered to incarcerated women at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, New York State’s only maximum security prison for women. The BHCP offers non-credit college-preparatory courses in writing and math, as well as credit-bearing courses leading to Associate of Arts degrees in social science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in sociology. With the cooperation of a consortium of New York area colleges, MMC has served as the degree-granting institution for the program since 1997, and has been responsible for its operations since 2004. More than 800 women have participated in BHCP since 1997. MMC has conferred more than 110 associate’s and bachelor’s degrees at Bedford Hills, since becoming the degree-granting institution for the program. For the past two years, 160 to 175 women have enrolled in courses each semester.
