MMC’s Learning Community Class (Bus. 100.L07 & L08) presents “The Base of the Pyramid: An Adventure in Social Entrepreneurship,” a talk focused on business, low-income consumers and changes in spending. The vast majority of people on the planet—over 4 billion—are in the bottom layer, the so-called base of the pyramid, and live on less than $3000. These consumers collectively spend trillions of dollars every year on goods and services. By and large, they are forced to pay a premium for access to those goods and services (healthcare, phones, housing, transportation, energy, financial services, food, etc) simply because the big companies have not yet built distribution to rural poor people. That premium means that an innovative company, which can deliver high quality products to low-income consumers for less than they currently spend, will have a unique and clear market advantage and will inevitably change (and hopefully improve) the lives of those consumers. Dr. Christopher Dickey, who received an M.B.A. in finance and entrepreneurship from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in public health from Columbia University, will be the keynote speaker.
