| (New York, NY) - Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, a son of one of the most famous families in American politics and one of the most influential lawmakers in the history of the Senate, died on August 26, 2009 at the age of 77.
On June 6, 1984, Marymount Manhattan College awarded Mr. Kennedy with a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. Mr. Kennedy was a supporter of the College and an advocate of higher education.
In his 1984 keynote address Mr. Kennedy said:
“Marymount Manhattan is a college which proves that excellence can be combined with idealism, and that dissent and debate can be combined with faith in a deeper truth. Your existence and experience are proof that you can fulfill, for yourselves and for others, the goal set for this school – ‘A future in the city, a future for the city.’ As your (college) president has said, ‘We must prepare for change. We must use what we know and translate it into new forms.’”
Mr. Kennedy was first elected to the Senate in 1962, at the age of 30, and his tenure there would span four decades. Kennedy championed health care reform, working wages and equal rights throughout his career. In August, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.
