The Alumni Book Club Meeting will feature Jane Austen’s Lady Susan and The Watsons, two short works that reveal the author’s development as a great artist. These novels show Jane Austen experimenting with a variety of different literary styles, from melodrama to satire, and exploring a range of social classes and settings. The early epistolary novel Lady Susan depicts an unscrupulous coquette, toying with the affections of several men. In contrast, The Watsons is a delightful fragment, whose spirited heroine Emma Watson finds her marriage opportunities restricted by poverty and pride.
Prior to the discussion of the works at The Madison Bistro, we will be touring the exhibit A Woman’s Wit: Jane Austen’s Life and Legacy at The Morgan Library and Museum. Please meet in the lobby of The Morgan Library at 5:30 p.m.
