(New York, NY) – New York Governor David A. Paterson announced the appointment of Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels in the Appellate Division, First Judicial Department, making her the first female Latin-American to be appointed to this division. Justice Manzanet-Daniels was appointed along with Justice Nelson S. Román to fill two new seats.
“Justice Manzanet-Daniels and Justice Román are accomplished, respected jurists with an impressive range of judicial and legal experience and a solid record of community service,” said Governor Paterson. “They will be a tremendous addition to the First Department.” Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels, a 1985 graduate of Marymount Manhattan College, said she is looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that come with her new duties.
“It’s humbling,” she said. “I take great pride in it and I have a lot of respect for this position. I want to represent the State of New York and all Latinos properly.”
She has been a Justice of the Supreme Court of New York, Bronx County, since 2002 where she presides over cases in Civil Term. From 2000 to 2001, Justice Manzanet-Daniels was a Judge of the Civil Court of the City of New York, Bronx County. Justice Manzanet-Daniels served as the Principal Law Clerk to the Honorable Luis A. Gonzalez from 1997 to 2000 while he was an Administrative Judge in the Civil Division and while he served in Appellate Term. She also served as Principal Law Clerk to the Honorable Frank Torres from 1994 to 1997 in Criminal Term, Bronx County. After graduation from law school, Justice Manzanet-Daniels was an attorney at the Legal Aid Society, Criminal Defense Division in Bronx County, a position she held from 1988 to 1994. Justice Manzanet-Daniels earned a Bachleor of Arts degree in psychology from Marymount Manhattan College and is a 1988 graduate of Hofstra University School of Law.
