Feb. 8: MMC Panel Addresses "Aftershock: The Future of Haiti"
February 8, 2010
Date: Monday, February 8 Time: 4-5:30 p.m. Location: The Commons West Contact: Yu-Yin Cheng, Ph.D., at ycheng@mmm.edu
The estimated death toll from the cataclysmic earthquake in Haiti is anywhere from 100,000-200,000 and counting. The capital city Port-au-Prince was largely destroyed leaving an estimated three million people either killed, wounded or homeless. Nations from around the world are rushing in to help. Despite a stunning global surge of aid, many survivors still lack water, food and tents. Thousands sleep outdoors, in terror of aftershocks. Roads, ports, communications—all in terrible shape before—are shattered. Managers and civil servants needed to help run the recovery are dead; the buildings they would run it from are flattened.
How does a nation re-build after such intense devastation and trauma? MMC’s history and international studies departments, Division of Social Sciences and the Office of Academic Affairs will host a panel of experts who will discuss Haiti’s past, present and future. Speakers include Dr. Leon Pamphile, author of several books on Haitian literacy and educational policies and founder of the Functional Literacy Ministry in Haiti; Ray Laforest, Haitian-American labor leader, activist and author of several articles/books on Haiti’s turbulent political history; and Ellen Houston, MMC instructor of international studies and consultant with the United Nations on gender and children rights issues.
The event is organized by the history and international studies departments and sponsored by the Division of Social Sciences and the Office of Academic Affairs.
