MMC will host children's book historian, author and critic Leonard S. Marcus in a lecture "The Picture Book Made New: Margaret Wise Brown, Her Illustrators and Her World" on Thursday, February 25. A book signing will follow in the Hewitt Gallery of Art, where the work by three of the finest contemporary children's book illustrators, Cheryl Hanna, William Low and Amy Schwartz, are exhibited.
Marcus has been writing about children's books since the 1970s. He has expressed his passion for biography through his books about children's book editor Ursula Nordstrom and author Margaret Wise Brown. Marcus has written several books, including Pass It Down: Five Pleasure Book Families Make Their Mark; Golden Legacy: How Golden Books Won Children's Hearts, Changed Published Forever, Became An American Icon Along the Way; and Minders of Make-believe: Idealists, Entrepreneurs, and the Shaping of American Children's Literature.
Marcus was born and raised in Mount Vernon, N.Y. He holds degrees in history from Yale University and poetry from the University of Iowa Graduate Writers’ Workshop. In 2007, Leonard was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Bank Street College of Education. He lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.
