THEATRE: The Crucible
November 17, 2004
MMC Theatre Production Workshop presents "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. Fifty-one years after winning the Tony Award for Play of the Year, this provocative drama continues to captivate and impassion audiences. In 1692 Puritan Salem, several young women led by Abigail Williams attempt to keep their improper behavior secret by maliciously accusing others of witchcraft. In an effort to free his accused wife, Elizabeth, from jail, John Proctor (a farmer) goes to court to expose the truth behind the accusations. The court, led by Danforth, the Deputy Governor of the Colony, becomes worried more about maintaining the court's power than about the truth, forcing Proctor to reveal his own shameful secret and challenge the court. This is a compelling play that continues to resonate as a parable of contemporary American society and politics. This production is performed by students in the Theatre Arts programs at the College with direction by David Mold, set design by Kristin Foti, lighting design by Ray Recht, and costume design by Christine Field.
