May 10: MMC Presents "MONEY TALKS or Who Knew? Corporations Are People Too!" with Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels '85

On January 21, 2010, a bitterly divided U.S. Supreme Court overturned two important precedents about First Amendment rights and ruled that the government may not ban political spending by corporations in candidate elections. The decision has generated substantial controversy – President Obama mentioned it in his first State of the Union address, and the House and Senate have both held hearings on the topic. Justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels ’85 of New York State’s Appellate Division and the Honorable Randy A. Daniels, former Secretary of State of New York, join us at Marymount Manhattan College to discuss the legal, political and social implications of Citizens United v. FEC. This event is sponsored by the MMC Division of Social Sciences and co-sponsored by the MMC Mock Trial Club.

Sallie Manzanet-Daniels ’85 was appointed Justice of the NY Appellate Division, First Judicial Dept., in September 2009, and is the first Latina to serve in the Appellate Division. She has served as Justice of the NY Supreme Court and Judge of the NYC Civil Court. She began her career as an attorney for the Legal Aid Society. She is a graduate of Marymount Manhattan College and Hofstra University School of Law.

Randy A. Daniels served as NY Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005 and as a member of the SUNY Board of Trustees for 11 years. He is currently Vice Chairman of Gilford Securities. Over the past two decades, he has had considerable experience in both the public and private sectors. Prior to that, Daniels had an extensive career as an international broadcast journalist that included several correspondent positions with CBS News. Daniels is a graduate of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
