The Annual Meeting will feature Ambassador Paulette A. Bethel, the Permanent Representative to the United Nations, in a discussion entitled “Half the World Deserves a Whole Voice: Voices of the Women of the Bahamas” addressing the challenges facing the women of the Bahamas. In her many years of service in the areas of international affairs, education and the private sector, Ambassador Paulette Bethel has worked to better the circumstances of women, especially in her native Bahamas.
The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies to foster women's empowerment and gender equality. Established in 1976, it provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programs to foster women's empowerment and gender equality in over 100 countries around the world. Placing women's human rights and security at the center of its efforts, UNIFEM focuses its efforts on four strategic areas to: End Violence agaist women and girls; Halt the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls; Reduce women's poverty and exclusion; and Support women's leadership in governance and post-conflict reconstruction.
