The MMC dance department presents its annual lecture series, Dialogues in Dance. This year’s series will feature the life and work of Alwin Nikolais. On October 7, Gay Morris, author and editor, leads the discussion “Objectivism and Sexual Confusion in the Early Dances of Alwin Nikolais.” In this lecture, Morris will discuss the choreography of Alwin Nikolais and his aesthetic of objectivism in relation to the human body onstage. Nikolais’ approach to movement as action seemingly allowed audiences to perceive the dancers’ bodies as gender-neutral. However, Morris suggests that Nikolais’ objectivism did not render them neutral, but rather confused, reflecting his own sexual ambivalence in a time of rampant homophobia.
