The MMC dance department presents its annual lecture series, Dialogues in Dance. This year’s series will feature the life and work of Alwin Nikolais. On October 12, Alberto Del Saz, co-director of Nikolais/Louis Foundation for Dance, and Peter Kyle, MMC adjunct assistant professor and Murray Louis and Nikolais Dance performer, lead the discussion “Preserving the Nikolais Legacy.” Both presenters worked closely with Nikolais prior to his death in 1993, and have taken on the responsibility of keeping the Nikolais dance tradition alive as teachers, choreographers and performers. Though Del Saz and Kyle offer different trajectories, they both have found ways to establish careers while keeping the work of Alwin Nikolais a presence among current dance students and patrons. Personal experiences of working with Nikolais will be shared, as well as the challenges of reconstructing Nikolais’ past repertoire to bring his work to new audiences.
