On Wednesday, February 23, Marymount Manhattan College will celebrate Charter Day and recognize 130 years of combined service by faculty and staff. The celebration will include a reception at 4 p.m. in the Regina Peruggi Room. President Judson R. Shaver, Ph.D. will recognize faculty and staff members for their years of service to the College.

Marymount Manhattan College was founded in 1936 by the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary as a two-year women’s college and a New York City extension of Marymount College n Tarrytown, New York. In 1948, the College moved to its present location on 71st Street and became a four-year bachelor degree-granting college; the first class graduated from MMC in 1950. In 1961, Marymount Manhattan was granted an absolute charter as an independent four-year college by the Regents of the University of the State of New York. Since then, Marymount Manhattan’s mission as an urban, independent, coeducational nonsectarian liberal arts college has expanded to include a diverse student body, including men, nontraditional students, and students from a variety of ethnic and geographic backgrounds.

Charter Day recognizes the College’s anniversary of receiving its independent charter. Charter Day is also an opportunity for the College to recognize the landmark intervals of service of its faculty and staff. This year’s honorees include: Ada Hernandez, Custodial Services (20 years); Dolma Adhikari, Reference and Serials Librarian (10 years); Ross Chappell, Operations Director, Theresa Lang Theatre (10 years); Paul Ciraulo, Executive Vice President for Administration and Finance (10 years ); Ruth Falconer, Associate Registrar, Center for Student Services (10 years); Benedetta Sampoli Benitez, Chair, Division of the Sciences (10 years); Martha Sledge, Chair, Department of Literature and Language (10 years); Laura Tropp, Chair Department of Communication Arts (10 years); and Jogy Vathappallil, Assistant Director of Client Services, Information Technology (10 years).
