April 27: "Crisis in Côte d'Ivoire" Discussion Features United Nations Expert Simon Tordjman
April 27, 2011
Date: Wednesday, April 27 Time: 7-8:30 p.m. Location: Commons West, (3rd Floor, Main Building) Contact: Orteg Dakaj at odakaj@mmm.edu
Join the Office of Multicultural Programs and the Division of International Studies for a discussion on the recent events surrounding the 2010-2011 Crisis in the Ivory Coast with United Nations expert Simon Tordjman, UN Women. Once hailed as a model of stability – and often referred to as the Jewel of West Africa – in 2002 the Ivory Coast broke out into a divisive civil war, which ended in 2004 through mediation by UN peacekeeping troops and the African Union. Its road back to prosperity has been plagued by political unrest, ethnic and social tension. Recently, violence erupted as a result of a political standoff between factions over the contested 2010 election leading to the ouster of President Gbagbo’s regime this April. Tordjman will lead a discussion on the origins of the recent crisis and prospects for peace and security in the years to come.
