New York, N.Y. – Marymount Manhattan student Alvin Young ’13 will soon have an opportunity to immerse himself in the culture of Morocco after being awarded a Boren Scholarship from the National Security Education Program and the Institute of International Education.
Young is the first student from Marymount Manhattan College to receive a Boren Scholarship, which provides a student up to $20,000 to study abroad in certain areas of the world. The scholarship is named for David L. Boren, the former U.S. Senator from Oklahoma and the principal author of the legislation that created the National Security Education Program and the Boren Awards. The longest serving chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Boren championed passage of NSEP before leaving the senate. He now serves as president of the University of Oklahoma. The Boren scholarship will support Young during the academic year of fall 2011and spring 2012.
Young will take courses at the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES), and will participate in cultural events offered at Mohammed V University through IES.
Director of Career Services Melissa Benca worked with Assistant Professor of Art History Adrienne Baxter Bell, Ph.D., to help Young secure the Boren Scholarship.
Young, originally from Jamaica, looks forward to embracing the Moroccan and North African culture and developing his foreign language skills in Arabic and French. After earning his undergraduate degree, Young would like to join the Peace Corps or volunteer with other international programs that assist countries with social and economic development projects.
“Winning the Boren Scholarship is a defining moment for me, because it proves that hard work and dedication will always be rewarded,” Young said. “I remember in November being told that no one from MMC has ever been awarded the scholarship. It was all the motivation I needed to apply. I am grateful for the help I received from Melissa Benca and Adrienne Baxter Bell. Without them, this would not have been possible.”
Marymount Manhattan College is an urban, independent, liberal arts college. The mission of the College is to educate a socially and economically diverse student body by fostering intellectual achievement and personal growth and by providing opportunities for career development.
