In Christopher Durang’s Betty’s Summer Vacation, Betty takes a summer share in a beach house on the ocean with four other eccentric characters and the laughs begin. Unfortunately, they are coming from the ceiling and everyone in the house can hear it. Durang’s 1999 Obie Award-winning farce is a trenchantly witty take on reality TV, the public’s voracious appetite for scandal, murder and mayhem, and our capacity to witness ever more disturbing images of brutality, be it in the form of computer games or posting on Facebook. The play is by turns a hilarious, fierce, controversial, and ultimately profound meditation on contemporary American culture—and terrifically entertaining in the bargain. This production is performed by students in the theatre arts programs of the College with direction by Richard Niles, scenic design by Rob Dutiel, lighting by Nia Adams, costumes by Becky Lasky and sound by David Corsello. An opening night reception follows the performance on Thursday, October 13. The content of this production is not appropriate for children.
