In Bertolt Brecht’s well-known parable play, The Good Soul of Szechuan, the gods descend to earth in search of a few good people and find only one, a young prostitute named Shen Te, in the capital of the Szechuan province. As Shen Te struggles to remain a good soul she finds that she must conjure a ruthless male persona, Shiu Ta, in order to survive in a corrupt capitalist culture. Through this epic drama, Brecht asks us to confront issues of morality, identity, gender, capitalism, corruption and religion. This production is performed by students in the theatre arts programs of the College with direction by Dyana Kimball, scenic design by Ray Recht, lighting by Bethany Taylor, costumes by Elise VanderKley, and sound design by Ido Levran. This production of The Good Soul of Szechuan is performed as a new translation by David Harrower and features original music by Bruce Lazarus. An opening night reception follows the performance on Wednesday, November 16.
