Nov. 10: Campus Ministry Presents Kristallnacht, The Night of Broken Glass with Milton Crossman, A Survivor’s Story
November 10, 2011
Date: Thursday, November 10 Time: 1-2:20 p.m. Location: The Chapel, 4th floor Main Building Contact: Director of Campus Ministry Rebecca Buchanan at rbuchanan@mmm.edu
On this night, November 9-10, 1938, almost 200 synagogues were destroyed, more than 8,000 Jewish shops were destroyed and looted, and tens of thousands of Jews were removed to the concentration camps. This attack received its name because of the great amount of glass that was smashed during this anti-Jewish riot. Riots took place throughout Germany and Austria on this night. How could a nation so culturally advanced organize a massacre of hatred and violence on the Jewish people in the 20th century?
It is essential to study and have conversations about genocide to understand the role of perpetrators, victims, and bystanders, as well as the international press. We must make hate crimes and genocide more visible in the Western World. Let us all be responsible global citizens. Let us offer others the symbol of hope instead of the symbols of abandonment to violence or death. Let us say, yes we can do something because all things are possible when we take action.
Please join us in hearing the amazing story of Milton Crossman, who is a survivor of Kristallnacht, and the Holocaust and speaks on the behalf of the Speakers Bureau of the Museum of Jewish Heritage, a living memorial to the Holocaust. There will be time for questions and dialogue after he makes his presentation.
