Nov. 5-15: The Tournées Festival: New French Films on Campus

Marymount Manhattan College has been selected as a recipient of the Tournées Festival grant for the 2012-2013 academic year, which will support a film festival held on the Marymount Manhattan campus throughout the month of November. The Tournées Festival is a program of French American Cultural Exchange (FACE) and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, which partner with more than 350 American universities and colleges to bring contemporary French cinema to campuses across the nation. All films are subtitled in English. Marymount Manhattan will feature the following films in screenings and post-screening discussions:
Tales of the Night by Michel Ocelot (Golden Bear, Berlin Film Festival)

Monday, November 5, 6 p.m.
This film is a bold, animated exploration of the art of visual storytelling through six intercalated tales from around the world that explore an imaginative world of adventure and romance with a rich and sophisticated reflection on the history and future of the narrative. A post-screening discussion will be led by Cecilia Feilla, Ph.D., associate professor of English and World Literature.
The Kid with a Bike by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne(Grand Jury Prize, Cannes Film Festival)

Wednesday, November 7, 6 p.m.
The Dardenne brothers' The Kid with a Bike is an unflinching look at the relationships between Cyril, a troubled 11-year-old, Guy, the father who abandoned him, and Samantha, the young woman who takes Cyril in as her own. As Cyril struggles to come to terms with Guy's decision, Samantha's own limits of patience and love are put to the test. A post-screening discussion will be led by Julie Huntington, Ph.D., assistant professor of French.
Un Homme Qui Crie (A Screaming Man) by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun (Jury Prize, Cannes Film Festival)

Monday, November 12, 6 p.m.
A Screaming Man offers a portrait of contemporary Chad through the lens of a fraught father-son relationship, illustrating the intimate connection between the personal and the political. A post-screening discussion will be led by Magda Maczynska, Ph.D., associate professor of English and World Literature.
Tomboy by Céline Sciamma (Teddy Award, Berlin Film Festival)

Tuesday, November 13, 6 p.m.
This is Céline Sciamma's portrait of a child who is untethered from the rule-bound codes of gender norms. When the family moves to a new home, Laure has an opportunity for reinvention, becoming Michaël to her new playmates. Anxieties, ambiguity and possibilities are unearthed as the viewer experiences empathic liminality. A post-screening discussion will be led by Giovanna Chesler, M.F.A., associate professor of Communication Arts, and our student-led G-SNAP (Gay-Straight National Alliance Project).
The Artist by Michel Hazanavicius (Best Picture, The Academy Awards)

Thursday, November 15, 6 p.m.
The Artist invites contemporary viewers to immerse themselves in a film about the silent era of Hollywood filmmaking and formation of the star system itself. The film utilizes the techniques of the silent era in telling this story, allowing spectators to experience the type of film matinee idol George Valentin starred in and in which Peppy Miller got her start, as well as the industrial transformation that made her career viable and his stagnate. A post-screening discussion will be led by MJ Robinson, Ph.D., assistant professor in Communication Arts.
The Tournées Festival was made possible with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the French Ministry of Culture (CNC) and sponsorship from the Florence Gould Foundation, the Grand Marnier Foundation and highbrow entertainment.
