Rescheduled due to weather! Feb. 23-24: MMC students to compete in American Mock Trial Association Regional Tournament at Yale University
January 21, 2013
On February 23rd and 24th, Assistant Professor Jill Beier will accompany 11 Marymount Manhattan College students traveling to Yale University to participate in the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) Regional Tournament.
AMTA serves as the governing body for intercollegiate mock trial competition and creates the case materials which are released to tournament participants in early fall each year. This year the case involves a wrongful death civil suit. In preparation for the tournament, MMC students have spent months studying and analyzing the case materials to create an effective trial strategy that includes dealing with various evidentiary issues, drafting opening and closing statements and drafting direct and cross examinations of the witnesses. Through engaging in trial simulations in competition with teams from other institutions, MMC students develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, as well as knowledge of legal practices and procedures.
Presently, AMTA hosts 24 regional tournaments, eight opening round championship tournaments and a national championship tournament each season. Approximately 600 teams from over 350 universities and colleges will compete in these tournaments. In total, AMTA provides a forum for over 5,300 undergraduate students each academic year to engage in intercollegiate mock trial competitions across the country.
