Read About MMC Students' January Session Abroad with Professors Rosenfeld and Dutiel

The below article was written by Elizabeth Enders '15, who participated in this session.

Over the January session, Professor Jason Rosenfeld and Professor Rob Dutiel took a group fourteen students to England and Belgium, traveling to London, Gent, Antwerp, Brussels, and Leuven. During their trip, they visited museums such as the Tate Britain, the National Gallery, Victor Horta’s House in Brussels, the House and Museum of Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerp, and the Rene Magritte Museum. Additionally, the class had the opportunity to go on walking tours of the cities, viewing attractions such as historical train stations and churches whose architecture was influenced by the Gothic style.

The trip was based around Professor Rosenfeld’s exhibition of the Pre-Raphaelites at the Tate Britain, which he co-curated. The students were able to get a private tour of the exhibit on its last day before the sold out crowd came through. The students viewed many famous works of art such as Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child, John Everett Millais’ Ophelia, and the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by Hubert and Jan van Eyck located in Gent. The students not only learned much about art, Professor Rosenfeld talked to them about curating exhibits, they got to see the extensive process behind the restoration of works of art, and a lot about the architecture within the cities and about the times which they were built in. The class was open to every student regardless of year or major.

From going on this trip, I can say that it was a once in a lifetime experience. Both Professor Rosenfeld and Professor Dutiel are very passionate and are experts in what they taught the class. Being able to see a copious amount of art and architecture during the nine day trip was a great opportunity for anyone who enjoys art. As a Communication Arts major I had little insight into the Art History world but both professors and the accompanying historian answered any questions that one might have had. Yes, we learned a great deal during the trip but we had a lot of free time to go explore and take in the cities that we were in.

I had an amazing time on the trip. The information we obtained throughout the course could have been taught in a classroom but being able to experience the culture, the art, and the architecture first-hand made the course that much better.
