MMC to present "The War on Terrorism and Civil Liberties"
 |
(New York, NY) Marymount Manhattan College will present "The War on Terrorism and Civil Liberties" featuring special guest lecturer Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on December 3rd at 5:30pm in the Regina Peruggi Room at MMC. This lecture will explore a variety of issues concerning the war on terrorism, including the effects of new homeland security measures on Americans' personal privacy.
Anthony D. Romero took the helm of the ACLU in September 2001, a week before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. He is the ACLU's sixth executive director, and the first Latino and openly gay man to serve in that capacity. Romero came to the organization from the Ford Foundation's Human Rights and International Cooperation Program, which he transformed into Ford's largest and most dynamic grant making-unit. He also served for nearly five years as a Ford Foundation Program Officer for Civil Rights and Racial Justice and two years at the Rockefeller Foundation where he led a review that helped to determine future directions in civil-rights advocacy. Romero sits on several not-for-profit boards and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the New York State Bar Association.
The ACLU works daily in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the American values of freedom and personal liberty embodied in the Constitution. Under Romero's leadership, the ACLU has relentlessly stood up for civil liberties and steadfastly championed that it is possible to be both safe and free. This lecture reflects MMC's goal to develop an awareness of social, political, and ethical issues in the community. For press seating, please call (212) 517-0452.
