Judy Carson Receives 2005 President's Medal

(New York, NY) In support of its mission to provide a high quality liberal arts education as an affordable option for a diverse body of students, Marymount Manhattan College raised $1 million at a gala benefit at Jazz at Lincoln Center on April 28. Judy Carson, class of 2003, received the 2005 President's Medal for her commitment to education.

Marymount Manhattan President Judson Shaver said that Carson received the Medal "in recognition of her distinguished record of excellence in her profession and dedication to the support of humanitarian concerns in the community and society at large."

Carson is a non-traditional Marymount Manhattan graduate who earned a bachelor's degree in art history in 2003. As a trustee and recent alumna, she is committed to enhancing educational opportunities for Marymount Manhattan students. A dedicated arts educator and community leader, she founded Learning to Look, a monthly arts appreciation program serving 850 students in inner city Catholic schools, and is a trustee on the boards of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund, the American Red Cross of Greater New York, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Education Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In order to provide a strong liberal arts education to a socially and economically diverse population, Marymount Manhattan College continually offers financial assistance to more than 80 percent of its students. The funds raised through the Gala will exclusively support such scholarships. Russell Carson, husband of the honoree and founding partner of Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe in New York City, generously agreed to match all funds raised through the benefit, bringing the total amount to an even $1 million.

The dinner was co-chaired by Paul B. Guenther, retired president of PaineWebber and chairman of the New York Philharmonic, Barbara McIntyre Hack, Esq., class of 1973, and Paul C. Lowerre, class of 1981 and First Vice President of UBS Financial Services. CBS2 news anchor Maurice DuBois served as master of ceremonies. Notable philanthropic leaders in attendance included Judy and Howard Berkowitz, Simona and Jerome Chazen, Marsha and Carl Hewitt, Theresa and Eugene Lang, and Rose-Lee and Keith Reinhard.
