The Writing Center Presents the 2005 Writers’ Conference and Writing Intensive
 |
(New York, NY) Today marks the beginning of a week of intense writing activity at The Writing Center at Marymount Manhattan College. This year's Writers' Conference, funded by the Brand Foundation of New York, will take place on Thursday, June 9. A four-day Writing Intensive will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 pm starting today and ending Thursday, June 9. Both events provide the opportunity for writers of all experience levels to refine their craft and learn from others in the field.
The Writers' Conference will feature two distinguished authors, Sir Harold Evans and Ron Chernow, as keynote speakers. A respected journalist and published author, Evans has served as president of Random House, editorial director of US News and World Report, and is author of the critically acclaimed book, The American Century. Chernow is considered one of the most distinguished commentators on politics and business in America today. He has written numerous best-selling business biographies, including Alexander Hamilton and The House of Morgan.
In addition to Evans and Chernow, a variety of authors, editors and literary agents will serve on a dozen fiction and non-fiction panels discussing subjects ranging from journalism to mystery writing. Additional authors participating in the Conference include Tony Hendra, Tama Janowitz, Francine Prose, Meg Wolitzer, Malachy McCourt, Carol Higgins Clark, Alan Furst, Harlan Coben and Lan Samantha Chang.
The four-day Writing Intensive will include workshops led by writing experts William Zinsser, Patrick McGrath, and Christopher Mason. Zinsser is the author of 17 books, including On Writing Well, which has sold more than a million copies. McGrath, a respected fiction writer, has written many best sellers, including The Grotesque, Dr. Haggard's Disease, and Port Mungo. Mason is a frequent contributor to The New York Times and New York Magazine and has been writing for more than a dozen years on the worlds of art, society, fashion and design. He is also known for his best-selling book, The Art of the Steal: Inside the Sotheby's-Christie's Auction House Scandal.
The Writing Center, which opened in February 1995 at Marymount Manhattan College, encourages the craft of writing through instruction, programs, and user-friendly facilities. Writers of every level receive expert assistance from Writing Center Director Lewis Burke Frumkes and additional members of the MMC faculty. The Center's resources include a literary library, publications, audio and video archives and writing carrels equipped with personal computers. In addition to the Writers' Conference and Writing Intensive, the Writing Center also features many unique events, courses and workshops throughout the year, including the Best Selling Authors Series with well-known writers such as Tom Wolfe, William Styron, Dominick Dunne, Gloria Steinem and others; monthly workshops celebrating various aspects of the writing business and craft; and clinics designed to assist writers with works-in-progress.
