(New York, NY) Marymount Manhattan College is the degree-granting institution for the college program at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. P.O.V.'s "What I Want My Words To Do To You" highlights one element of this program: the writing workshop conducted by Eve Ensler at the prison.

At Bedford Hills, women have the opportunity to take college courses and earn a two- or four-year degree. Judson R. Shaver, Ph.D., President of Marymount Manhattan College is on the board of the Women's Prison Education Partnership, which is the driving force behind the college program. Dr. Shaver is committed to providing the opportunity for women at Bedford Hills to achieve a solid education in the hope that it will benefit not only them but their families as well.

A study conducted in 2000 by the New York State Department of Correctional Services shows women who attend college while in prison were significantly less likely to be reincarcerated (7.7%) over 36 months than those who did not attend college while in prison (29.9%). Higher education in prison clearly reduces crime and reincarceration.
