MMC Reaction to the Closing of Fordham University's Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY

New York, NY Marymount Manhattan College released the following statement in reaction to the announcement on Friday, October 7, that Tarrytown, NY based Marymount College, which is owned by Fordham University, would be closing:

We at Marymount Manhattan College were deeply saddened to hear the news that Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York will be closing its doors. MMC was founded in 1936 as a New York City extension of Marymount in Tarrytown, and the two schools share a rich history. Though their names are similar, it must be pointed out that the two colleges have not been directly affiliated for some time. In 1961, MMC became an independent four-year college, after it was granted an absolute charter by the Regents of the University of the State of New York, ending its official connection to Marymount College in Tarrytown.

Marymount Manhattan remains independent today, and is thriving as an urban, coeducational, nonsectarian liberal arts college. Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, MMC currently enrolls over 2000 undergraduate students, educating a socially and economically diverse population by fostering intellectual achievement and personal growth. Marymount Manhattan College plays an important role in New York City's higher education landscape, and we are confident that MMC will continue to grow and evolve as a strong educational institution in the years to come.
