MMC Hosts "Bound for Broadway" to Benefit the Christopher Reeve Foundation
 |
(New York, NY) The student cabaret show "Bound for Broadway" will return to Marymount Manhattan College for the fourth year on Thursday, March 16. The event, which has become a popular annual tradition at MMC and is sponsored by Student Theatre at Marymount (STAM), will showcase the performances of musical theatre students and include a raffle and a catered dinner.
All proceeds from "Bound for Broadway" will go to the Christopher Reeve Foundation, which is committed to finding treatments and cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other neurological disorders, and improving the quality of life for people living with disabilities.
Founded and organized by theatre major Sarah Galli '06, whose brother endured the same type of spinal cord injury that disabled Christopher Reeve, the event gives students an opportunity to display their talent, while simultaneously raising money for a cause that celebrates the memory and mission of a gallant and respected member of the theatre community.
Following last year's sold-out performance, this year's "Bound for Broadway" event will be a tribute to Cole Porter. One of the most beloved composer/lyricists in Broadway history, many of Porter's musicals ("Kiss Me Kate," "Anything Goes") and songs ("I Get A Kick Out of You," "Night and Day," "I've Got You Under My Skin") are still performed to great acclaim today. Many performers have recorded interpretations of his music to great success, including Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.
Galli's brother Jeffrey was paralyzed six years ago in a diving accident that left him a "high-level" quadriplegic. Watching her family struggle to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of such a devastating accident has reinforced her passion to help continue the work that Reeve began.
"I have been overwhelmed by the MMC community's positive response to 'Bound for Broadway,'" said Galli. "I hope that, even after I graduate this spring, the event will continue to thrive for years to come."
"Bound for Broadway" will take place Thursday, March 16th, at 6:00 PM in the Regina Peruggi Room (Marymount Manhattan College, 221 East 71st Street). The evening includes a catered dinner, the program, and a raffle. Ticket cost $8 in advance, and $10 at the door. All proceeds go to the Christopher Reeve Foundation. Photos and video of the event will be available by request. Please contact the event coordinator, Sarah Galli (sgalli@mmm.edu, 401.864.8962) for more information about the event.
