MMC Honors Egi Maccioni with 2006 President’s Medal
 |
(New York, NY) Last night Marymount Manhattan College honored Egidiana Maccioni with the President's Medal at the College's 2006 Gala Benefit: Celebrating the Spirit of the City. Famed New York columnist Liz Smith served as the Gala's Mistress of Ceremonies, this year held at the Rainbow Room. Paul C. Lowerre '81 and MMC trustee Angela E. Vallot were gala co-chairs. The honoree's husband Sirio and sons Mario, Marco and Mauro also served as honorary chairs, and were on hand to celebrate.
The benefit drew a crowd of about 275 people, including members of the College community and friends of the Maccionis. This year's Gala raised an impressive $400,000 for scholarship support at MMC.
Known to just about everybody as Egi, Egidiana Maccioni grew up in Italy, where she learned the art and range of Italian cuisine from her Tuscan and Bolognese grandmothers. In 1974 she and her husband Sirio opened Le Cirque. As the consulting chef, Egi contributed her signature recipes to create the now world-renowned menu for the famed Manhattan eatery. With help from their sons, Egi and Sirio opened Osteria del Circo in 1996, again with a menu derived almost entirely from Egi's recipes. The Maccioni family is currently rebuilding the legendary Le Cirque, scheduled to open this spring at One Beacon Place.
Before presenting her with the President's Medal, MMC President Judson R. Shaver addressed the honoree, saying, "At Marymount Manhattan College, we spend every day teaching our students the value of learning, practicing and perfecting the things that they are passionate about. By all that you have quietly done and continue to do, you have demonstrated to everyone here tonight that extraordinary things happen when the ordinary things are done exceptionally well."
In accepting the President's Medal from Marymount Manhattan, Egi Maccioni joins a long line of worthy recipients who have been recognized over the years with MMC's highest honor. Established in 1984, the President's Medal recognizes outstanding individuals who have distinguished themselves through service to their professions and communities. Proceeds from the annual gala where the Medal is awarded each spring help the College continue to provide an affordable, high-quality liberal arts education to a diverse community of students.
