MMC Student Named 2006 Jeannette K. Watson Fellow
 |
(New York, NY) Jamie-Lynn Argenta '08 has been awarded a 2006 Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship. Intended to groom college freshmen and sophomores for professional and personal leadership, the prestigious three-year fellowship program offers paid internships, mentoring and enhanced educational opportunities to New York City undergraduates who demonstrate exceptional promise, outstanding leadership skills and commitment to the common good.
Having just concluded her sophomore year at Marymount Manhattan, Argenta is one of only fifteen students to have been selected from a pool of nominees submitted by ten public and private colleges in the New York City region.
Working toward a double major in history and political science, and a minor in art history, Argenta has found many ways to be involved in academic and extracurricular activities at MMC. She is a staff reporter for The Monitor, MMC's student newspaper, and will serve as treasurer of the Campus Activities Board in the next academic year. During the fall of 2005, she served as a peer mentor for first-year students, and continues to work as a peer tutor in the Center for Academic Advancement. She has recently been selected to serve as a student member of the Academic Integrity Review Board at Marymount Manhattan. In the midst all this activity, Argenta has also earned Dean's List honors each semester since she began her studies at MMC.
Established by the Thomas J. Watson Foundation in 1999, the Watson Fellowship operates on the principle that "talent is broadly distributed but only selectively developed." Watson Fellows have their pick of coveted job placements over three consecutive summers in non-profit agencies, business organizations and government service that give them a chance to grow and develop interpersonal skills and gain self-confidence in a variety of professional settings. In the third summer, Watson Fellows can apply for an international assignment through partnerships with Save the Children, the Institute of International Education, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and other organizations.
A summer series of weekly seminars further enhances the learning experience by encouraging debate and interaction, and also provides an opportunity for Watson Fellows to share learning from their work experiences. Visits to cultural institutions like Shakespeare in the Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art enable students to discover New York's free summer offerings. Every Watson Fellow receives a generous stipend as compensation and support for summer employment.
Argenta is currently in the process of interviewing for her first Watson summer internship. In the past, Marymount Manhattan College recipients have spent their first summer at such organizations as The Conference Board and The Bronx Defenders. Previous MMC recipients are Kaisa Reterska '02, Melissa Rodriguez '04, Isabel Sinistore '04, Jessica Murray '05, Marilyn Ordonez '05, Cornel Bradford '06 and Christopher Perre '07.
