MMC Graduates 18 Bedford Hills College Program Students
 |
<(Bedford, N.Y.) On June 1, 2006, Marymount Manhattan College (MMC) hosted graduation ceremonies for the Bedford Hills College Program (BHCP) at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. President Judson Shaver presented associate's degrees to 10 students and bachelor's degrees to eight students. This year's class represents the largest number of BHCP graduates since 1997, when MMC became the degree granting institution and member of a unique consortium of colleges that supports BHCP.
Currently serving 150 undergraduate students, BHCP consists of non-credit college preparatory courses and credit-bearing courses, awarding Associate of Arts degrees in Social Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Sociology.
Sister Elaine Roulet served as the ceremony's commencement speaker. She has been the family liaison at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility since 1970, but is also the director of the children's center, a program that has inspired other prisons to follow suit. She has long demonstrated a special advocacy for women inmates and the unique problems they face.
Nora Moran (pictured above President Shaver) served as the bachelor's class speaker for the graduating class. The ceremony's theme was inspired by these words from Martin Luther King Jr.: "Everyone has the power for greatness, not for fame but for greatness, because greatness is determined by service." Moran urged fellow graduates to look for unique ways to render service while incarcerated.
Joining President Shaver in honoring the graduates were Dr. Dawn R. Weber, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College at MMC, Louise Feroe, President of Mercy College, Fern Khan, Dean of the Division of Continuing Education at Bank Street College, and Geoffrey Bracket, Associate Provost of Pace University.
