John Canemaker '74 Wins an Oscar
 |
(New York, NY) Last night the Academy Award for best animated short film was given to Marymount Manhattan alumnus John Canemaker '74. Canemaker and his partner, Peggy Stern, accepted the honor for their film, The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation.
Born in 1943, Canemaker works as an independent animator, animation historian, author, teacher and lecturer. In 1980, he began teaching and developing the animation program at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, Kanbar Institute of Film and Television Department. Raised in Elmira, NY, Canemaker pursued acting in New York City from 1961 to 1965. In 1967, after a two-year stint in the Army, Canemaker enrolled at MMC and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications in 1974. He received a Master of Fine Arts in Film from New York University in 1976. Canemaker and Stern's Academy Award-winning film follows a son as he explores his difficult relationship with his dead father through an imaginary conversation about the older man's past. At the awards ceremony, Canemaker said, "Peggy and I thank the Academy for this great honor. And also for your faith in hand-drawn animation, which can still pack an emotional wallop." Canemaker has credited former MMC professor Sister Dymphna Leonard with encouraging him to first seriously pursue his interest in animation.
