MMC Professor Twila Liggett Nominated for Seven Daytime Emmy Awards

(New York, NY) MMC professor Twila Liggett has been nominated for seven Daytime Emmy Awards for her involvement with the PBS Children’s TV series Reading Rainbow. An assistant professor of teacher education with a specialty in literacy at Marymount Manhattan, Dr. Liggett is also the founder of Reading Rainbow. She was the executive producer of the series from its inception in 1983 through fall of 2006. The College congratulates Dr. Liggett’s nominations, which include Outstanding Children’s Series, Outstanding Writing in a Children’s Series, Outstanding Performance in a Children’s Series – Levar Burton, Outstanding Achievement in Single Camera Photography, Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition, Outstanding Achievement in Live & Direct To Tape Sound Mixing, and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing - Live Action.
Under Dr. Liggett’s leadership, Reading Rainbow has earned over 250 awards in over twenty seasons. Some of the honors the series has received include twenty-four Emmys, a prestigious Peabody, six international Priz Jeunesse Awards, nine Parents Choice Awards and nine Cine Golden Eagles.
Dr. Liggett holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum, Instruction and Administration from the University of Nebraska, a MA in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska and a BS in Secondary and Music Education from Union College in Nebraska. Marymount Manhattan awarded Dr. Liggett an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2001.
Dr. Liggett has published extensively on topics ranging from literacy to human potential. In 1979 she received an American Educational Research Association award for a work she co-authored, The Whole Person Book: Toward Self-Discovery and Life Options. She has also contributed to the Reading Rainbow Guide To Children's Books: The 101 Best Titles, Family Literacy: Connections In Schools and Communities, A Handbook for Literacy Educators: Research on Teaching the Communicative and Visual Arts, and The Continuum Encyclopedia of Children’s Literature.
In a recent interview with Education Update: Online, Dr. Liggett stated that the goal of Reading Rainbow is “…to build an affection for and a passion for reading in the early years that will help us prevent something that is even scarier than illiteracy—aliteracy; when kids know how to read but choose not to.”
The Children’s Emmy Awards will be given as part of the 34th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on June 15.
