Marymount Manhattan to Celebrate Visionaries at 2007 Gala Benefit

(New York, NY) On March 20, 2007, friends of Marymount Manhattan will gather at the Rainbow Room to honor two New York visionaries: Geraldine Ferraro ’56 and Natan Wekselbaum, founder and owner of Gracious Home.

In accepting the President’s Medal from Marymount Manhattan, Ferraro and Wekselbaum join a long line of worthy recipients who have been recognized over the years with MMC’s highest honor. Established in 1984, the President's Medal recognizes outstanding individuals who have distinguished themselves through service to their professions and communities. Proceeds from the annual gala where the Medal is awarded each spring help the College continue to provide an affordable, high-quality liberal arts education to a diverse community of students. A complete list of past medal recipients is included below.

As the first and only woman ever to be nominated by a major party ticket for vice president of the United States, Geraldine Ferraro has built a lasting and important legacy, and is a national icon for women inspired to enter the world of politics and public service. She is also one of Marymount Manhattan’s most recognized alumni. Ferraro received her law degree from Fordham University School of Law, one of only two women in the graduating class of 1960. After working as a prosecutor in the Queens County district attorney's office, she was elected to the House of Representatives from New York's Ninth Congressional District in Queens in 1978. Since her run for the vice presidency in 1984 and throughout all of her tireless work as a public servant, Geraldine Ferraro has remained fiercely loyal to MMC. In 2006 she celebrated her 50th reunion and was awarded the Pere Gailhac Award, which is given annually to a graduate who has demonstrated continuous service to Marymount Manhattan College.

Natan Wekselbaum, a trustee and long-time supporter of Marymount Manhattan, immigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1961. Two years later, he and his brother founded Gracious Home, a specialty housewares store with an emphasis on customer service. Today Gracious Home continues to stock a variety of housewares, home furnishings and hardware while paying special attention to customer needs and requests. The store now has two locations, employs about 450 people, and is ranked on the Crain’s New York Business list of largest minority-owned businesses in the New York area. Gracious Home is a New York City institution, with Natan Wekselbaum the driving force behind the company’s success.
