The human figure constitutes the fundamental element of historical, religious, mythological, and genre imagery. While figure painting can register a likeness, it can also serve as a vehicle for conveying narrative and expressing emotion. Lately, the figure has again taken on a range of politically charged meanings and is frequently associated with issues of gender and identity. As presented, we will see the figure as an image, as a symbol, as a style, and ultimately as a concrete portrayal of ourselves and our own lives.
