MMC Mourns William E. Murray

Memorial Service for William Edwards Murray
(New York, NY) Marymount Manhattan College mourns the loss of former Chairman of the Board and Trustee Emeritus William E. Murray. Mr. Murray passed away on August 4, 2007. A trustee of the College from 1989 to 2002, he had been a generous financial supporter and an active member of the College community for many years. He will be missed by Marymount Manhattan College and the many institutions of education, medicine, and the arts, which have benefited from his dedicated involvement and support.
For over 50 years, Mr. Murray led a successful law career in New York, Georgia and South Carolina. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as an engineering officer and lieutenant. As the founder and Chairman of the Board of East Bay Company, he worked in real estate development throughout the East Coast and revitalized historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina.
Mr. Murray has served on the boards of The Medical University of South Carolina, East West Institute, Spoleto Festival, U.S.A. and Educational T.V. of South Carolina, The Cancer Research Institute and Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital. He was awarded the Order of The Palmetto by Governor Riley and Governor Hodges.
Mr. Murray was born in Charleston to Leon Dallas Murray and Winnie Davis Edwards. He continued his education there, earning a bachelor’s and a law degree from The University of South Carolina. He earned his L.L.M. in Taxation from Harvard Law School and attended New York University School of Law.
He is survived by his life partner, Helene Rae Flynn, four daughters, son-in-law, brother, six grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
