(New York, NY) Communication Science and Disorders (CSD) students from Marymount Manhattan will complete an internship program that will fulfill the New York State requirements and enable them to acquire the Certificate for Teaching Students with Speech and Language Disabilities upon graduation this spring. On January 31, the CSD students met with internship supervisors to prepare for the culminating internship with the Department of Education.

Internship supervisors welcomed students and planned for a semester of speech-language therapy in the Department of Education, which will amount to a 150-hour clinical practicum. Supervisors gave an overview of the clinical case loads that the MMC students will be managing, including patients with a wide variety of speech, language, hearing, and feeding/swallowing difficulties within the public school setting. Students will gain experience in therapy treatment for communication disorders such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism and developmental language impairments.

Marymount Manhattan has benefited from the support of Department of Education supervisors for CSD students for 13 years. The clinical supervisors received training on mentoring and reflected on their early experiences in order to understand the perspectives of the new student interns. The CSD Department organized the event, which took place in the Regina Peruggi Room.
