Philanthropist Issues Challenge That Brings In over $500,000 in Scholarship Support For MMC
 |
(New York, NY) While Marymount Manhattan College held a recent dinner at the Plaza Athenee to recognize the generosity of its donors, they had the incredible surprise of coming away with over $543,000 in new scholarship funds from many of the people they had gathered to thank. This windfall was the direct result of a challenge issued at the dinner by Eugene Lang to everyone else in attendance. The guests at the dinner included alumni, trustees, administrators and faculty who had supported the College with generous gifts in the last year. Mr. Lang told Dr. Judson Shaver, President of MMC that he would donate $250,000 in scholarship funds if others in the room could match it. President Shaver then stepped to the podium to issue the challenge and by the time dinner was over, $543,000 in all was raised for current and future MMC students. As Mr. Lang said, "I always bet on a sure thing." "At a time when many colleges and universities are experiencing a decline in charitable giving, to receive this level of support for Marymount Manhattan in a single evening is truly remarkable. I wish to thank Eugene and Theresa Lang for their continued generosity and all of our other supporters for their commitment to Marymount Manhattan and our students." Eugene and Theresa Lang have been generous MMC benefactors for several years. In addition to an endowed scholarship in Mrs. Lang's name, the College's Theatre and Center for Producing are named in her honor.
