The Economics minor is a valuable addition to any major you choose at MMC. You will develop conceptual and critical thinking skills while gaining an understanding of the global economy and financial markets. The minor consists of 15 credits in all with three required courses and two electives offered jointly by the Business Division and Social Sciences Division.

GOALS FOR MINOR IN ECONOMICS
After completing the economics minor, students will be able to:
  • Apply concepts, theories, and principles of economics;
  • Utilize critical thinking skills using concepts of economic theory to analyze economic conditions and evaluate policy;
  • Use data, quantitative analysis and the scientific method as it applies to economics and finance;
  • Articulate an understanding of the global economy and financial markets.

Descriptions of Required Courses:

IS/ECO 150. Economy, Society and the State
This course examines the role of the market economy as a means of both achieving economic development and satisfying individuals needs. Basic economic concepts are introduced and used to analyze the interactions of consumers, businesses and governmental institutions. The course will also explore a set of related issues including poverty, the distributions of income, global inequality, the limits of the market and the role of the government in a market economy. Prerequisites: WRIT 101 or permission of department.

ECO 210. Principles of Macroeconomics
The students will examine the fundamentals of national income theory and develop a working model of the aggregate economy. The model will be used as a tool to investigate spending by consumers, businesses, and government sectors. The operations of commercial banks and the Federal Reserve Bank will be explored. Prerequisite: WRIT 101

IS/ECO 214. The Global Economy
This course will examine the changing nature of the global economy, trying to understand better the complex interaction between transnational corporations and the nation-state set within the context of a volatile technological environment. It will pay particular attention to regional and international trading blocks and international organizations such as the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund, and The World Bank. Prerequisites: WRIT 101 & IS/ECO 150 or ECO 210.


Student Activities

The Honors Colloquium is a college-wide event that takes place each spring in order to recognize the work of students in all majors. Students submit papers, projects, films, or performance proposals to the faculty Honors Committee, and the outstanding works are chosen for presentation at an all-day event. Business students have presented group projects or individual reports analyzing companies, brands, or advertising campaigns.

Sigma Beta Delta is the national Honors Society for students of Business and Accounting. Each spring the Business Division inducts those students in the upper 20 percent of the junior or senior class

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a community service project in which Marymount Accounting and Business students help low-income New Yorkers prepare their income tax returns.
