The Transitions Student Support Group

With the Transitions Group, CAPS provides a gathering place for students having any difficulty whatsoever related to their experiences in college. The purpose of the group is for students to join together and provide acceptance, support, and constructive feedback to one another in a safe and supportive atmosphere. People who attend the meetings are requested to keep the content of the meetings confidential, which means an attendee should not discuss the events of the group to a person who did not attend. A staff member from CAPS serves as a facilitator during Transitions meetings and interested students are encouraged to arrive at the beginning of each meeting.

What the Transitions Group discusses in a meeting is completely up to the participants in attendance. Usually, students talk about what is bothering them at the time or they discuss their struggles in college and seek feedback on how to change things in positive ways. Again, the primary purpose of the Transitions Group is to have a safe place to talk with your peers about the challenges of the college experience, whatever your particular difficulties may be. No problem or issue is "too small" to discuss. If it is something that is bothering you, then bringing it to Transitions is justified.

Students often describe some understandable ambivalence with the idea of talking to others about their concerns in a group. However, after this initial nervousness, most students find a great deal of support and helpfulness from coming to the meetings. Often, students feel less isolated when they begin to see that they are not alone in their struggles and that other students experience similar difficulties in college. Other students have reported that they have learned a great deal about themselves by sharing their worries with others and that they also have benefited from the act of helping others.

How To Take Advantage of The Transitions Group
The Transitions Group meets once a week and attendance is open to all students at MMC. If you are interested in attending a meeting, you don't need to call in advance, reserve a spot, or enroll in anything. Just come by a couple minutes before the meeting begins and find a seat. Transitions is intended to be a resource to students to use on an "as needed basis." When something is causing you concern and you're looking for some support and feedback, come by the Transitions meeting that week, for several weeks, or for an entire semester.
