LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR A BETTER MMC
Strategic Planning Commitee Sets Sights for 2013

Since September the Strategic Planning Task Force has been meeting weekly to develop a strategic plan for 2008 - 2013. The committee consists of faculty, staff and student representatives. The committee has held Town Halls throughout the semester to gauge opinions and facilitate input from the college wide community. Strategic Planning Committee co-chair and communication arts professor Katie Lebesco states, "We've had from 20 to almost 50 attendees at each of the 4 Town Halls so far. We feel this is a good turnout, given how busy our students, faculty and staff are, but of course we'd always like to see more participation, especially from students."

The discussion is being executed in three steps. The first two phases discussed the internal and external trends and factors that will affect MMC's strategic plan, and the college's priorities in planning.

One of the many issues discussed has been the declining diversity at MMC, and what can and should be done to address it. Other issues include, retention and the identity of the college. "The Strategic Planning Committee debriefs after the Town Halls," comments professor Lebesco, "and the feedback/discussion at these meetings will help to guide our work as we identify priorities for the 2008-2013 plan in the months ahead."

The final phase will be drafting the plan, which will occur mostly in the spring. Town Halls will continue to be held throughout the process. "Students will be significantly affected by the Strategic Plan that is developed, since the plan identifies priorities for program and budget decisions for the next five years. Thus students have a clear stake in helping to shape the discussion," says professor Lebesco, "Students also offer a unique perspective on the College that is a vital element in our plans for the future."
