NYCPAS High School Symposium 2011

On June 11, the Marymount Manhattan Division of Sciences hosted the New York City Partnership to Advance Science (NYCPAS) High School Symposium that featured 14 collaborative research projects. The one-day symposium was a culmination of a year-long collaboration among nine New York City high schools with faculty and students from the Division of Sciences of Marymount Manhattan College. The results of the research projects were presented at the symposium that was organized by Associate Professor of Biology Ann Aguanno Ph.D. Six New York City high school students received awards for their winning projects at the symposium. Winners included Page Podlucky and Ramona Bledea (Staten Island Technical High School) for "Stop! Think before you heat: a study about bisphenol-a leaching from plastic containers into liquids"; Stephanie Ospina, Melissa Echavarria and Christiline Fernandez (Cathedral High School ) for "Social skill development in adolescent girls: single-gender versus coeducational schools"; and Katherine Adams (The Brearley School) for "Tracing the spread of antibiotic resistance in bacteria."

The New York City Partnership to Advance Science (NYCPAS) was conceived by Marymount Manhattan College to provide high school students meaningful research opportunities.
